In The Carnival of Life, Mara N Machado transforms personal experience into symbolic language. Created during the years she lived in Europe, the drawing is born from a longing for Brazilian customs, especially carnival, a vibrant manifestation of identity, color, and emotion.
Immersed in European culture, where carnival does not occupy the same symbolic space, the artist experienced an internal contrast: outwardly, adaptation; inwardly, the pulsating memory of Brazil. Daily life was a constant race to survive, work, and gain ground. A different carnival, not of celebration, but of effort.
Masks become a central element of the work. These are not festive masks, but emotional ones. They represent the need to conceal feelings, to contain longing, to maintain steadfastness in the face of distance. The carnival that was once a celebration transforms into a metaphor for life: assumed roles, contained emotions, fragmented identity.
More than nostalgia, the work reveals resilience. Between cultures, between times, between 2009 and 2022, the drawing matures, as does the artist herself.
